'Belvedere' 

 

A competition entry for a viewpoint overlooking the remote Corgarff Castle and grounds as part of the Scottish Scenic Routes Initiative in conjunction with the Scottish Government and the Cairngorm's National Park.

 

Corgarff Castle’s robust and intriguing outer walls provide shelter and defense for the castle but also frame views out through deep revealing openings. A defensive wall providing a calm place from which to view the stark beauty of the Cairngorm landscape is one which the proposal for the nearby lay-by takes inspiration. The proposal seeks to create a contemporary interpretation of the Castle’s defensive wall, part battlement, part rampart, which takes full advantage of a steep topography to project the visitor to a higher vantage point and cutting into the snowdrifts common during the winter months.
